Using the Offline mode enabled in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, the files can be made available to users anytime, anywhere which is an awesome boost to performance.

Docs, Sheets, Slides the collaborative tools of G Suite Basic can now be operated offline when there is no internet or poor internet connection within Google Drive. Available offline files can also be previewed using the Offline Preview Mode.


To make files available offline, simply right click on the files within Google Drive.



Admins and end users are impacted by this feature.


While in transit or during poor internet connectivity, users may need to access and work on the files.


It is possible to create, edit and comment on Docs, Sheets or Slides using the Offline mode.



Once the user regains connectivity to the internet, the offline files will then sync in Drive.


However, the Google Docs Offline extension is required which is made available by default to all Chrome users.


For Offline enabled users, this feature is ON by default.


Based on how recently the files are accessed, Google Drive smartly and automatically makes a number of Google Docs, Sheets, Slides files available.


  • Admins: This feature can be enabled by Admins for all or some users:

    • go to Apps > G Suite > Docs or Drive to enable Offline access.

    • Note: The default for this feature is, - access on any device users sign into, can be enabled for all users, except on Chromebooks, where it is not enabled automatically.

  • End users: To work with the offline files, it is required to enable offline access in the Drive settings:

    • Click the gear icon from Google Drive at the top right corner, select Settings > General and select Sync Google Docs, Sheets, Slides to the computer so that it can be edited offline.

    • A checkmark icon will appear once offline access is enabled, in the top right corner next to Settings (gear icon) and Support (question mark). Offline preview toggle can be found when the icon is clicked.


This long-awaited new feature is expected to add on to the already beneficial G suite and make it more efficient to use for both the admin and the end users.
