Google Introduces Live Captions in Hangouts Meet for Android

Live captions help make your meetings more productive by reducing hurdles to holding meetings between users of different hearing abilities, regardless of whether they are participating remotely or in person.

Google Introduces Live Captions in Hangouts Meet for Android

Hangouts Meet is an application that Google has designed for FHD video conferencing. It is used for video conferences with people inside or outside of your organization. You can join Hangouts Meet from a computer, mobile device, or conference room Hangout Meet Kit.


Hangouts meet supports 25 participants for G Suite Basic, 50 participants for G Suite Business, 100 participants for G Suite Enterprise at a time. 


In Hangouts Meet window, at the top right corner, you can see who’s talking, followed by a longer list of participants’ screens, names and emails below. 


Previously you were able to see the live caption of the speaker on Computer. Now it is available on Android. So now you can see the Live Captions of the Speaker on your Android device. 



Additionally, you can now easily turn on live captions on the web by one click only.



End users will be impacted by this change. Live captions help make your meetings more productive by reducing hurdles to holding meetings between users of different hearing abilities, regardless of whether they are participating remotely or in person.


  • On Android: You have to click on the closed caption button on the top right of the Hangout Meet app when you are in a meeting. This caption is only shown here for English language users. It can be shown in the triple-dot for all other languages.

  • On the web and on Hangouts Meet Kit: You have to click on the captions button at the bottom right of the Hangouts Meet screen. This caption is only shown here for English language users. It can be shown in the triple-dot for all other languages.

  • On devices with a Mimo touchscreen: Tap the captions option in the right-hand panel. This Caption is only shown here for English language users. It can be shown under Settings for all other languages.

Additional details:

When you turn on captions, it will be visible on that particular device. If other participants in the meeting wish to see the captions, they’ll have to turn it on in their respective devices as well.
