Google Vault enables users to archive, manage and preserve Gmail and chats for governance, eDiscovery and regulatory investigations designed to reduce costs and risks.
Google Vault is designed in those cases, where there is a potential and legal issue associated with enterprise data. For instance, an employee may destroy mail data. Vault allows administrators to hold employees’ account on cloud and recover the data, even when it is destroyed from users’ interface. One can keep data on hold and can export the matter with authorized people, if required. Facility is provided to search mail and drive data and export the results, saving those queries for future use. Admin can also use it to set up Company Policy.
There are a lot of misconceptions out there about what Vault can and can’t do for your domain.
People often make mistakes, when they start thinking of vault as a backup solution. This is a misconception and needs to be cleared. Intensively Vault is not a backup solution.
For example, you can:
Search your domain’s email data
Place user accounts (and related data) on litigation hold to preserve email data
Manage related searches and litigation holds under a single container, called a matter
Share matters among authorized users
Export search results in standard file formats
Save your search queries
Set email retention policies for your domain
