Key Features and Benefits of Route 53 Service on AWS

Amazon Route 53 is a highly available and scalable Domain Name System (DNS) web service along with monitoring and management.

Key Features and Benefits of Route 53 Service on AWS

Amazon Route 53 effectively is a service that connects user requests to infrastructure running in AWS – such as Amazon EC2 (Elastic compute cloud)  instances, Elastic Load Balancing load balancers( ELB), or Amazon S3( Simple Storage solutions ) buckets.

Route 53 functions :

  • DNS Management : The work of DNS (Domain Name System) is to translate domain names into IP Addresses, which computers can understand, where all other name servers will be marked when looking for information about the domain name. Name servers are computer servers that implement a name-service protocol and translate requests for names into IP addresses, controlling which server an end-user will reach when they type a domain name into their web browser.
  • Traffic Management : If you have any existing domain in another platform. you can switch the same domain into route 53 thereby routing the traffic for your domains. Ex : If you have purchased domain in GoDaddy and your server in AWS, so in that case, all your incoming traffic can be routed in AWS server.
  • Monitoring : Route 53 can monitor the health of your resources and send traffic accordingly through healthy resources only.
  • Domain Registration : For purchasing new domain with AWS.

Benefits of using Route 53 :

  • Highly available : AWS Route 53 is built using AWS’s highly available and reliable infrastructure. DNS servers are distributed across many availability zones, which helps in routing end users to your website consistently.
  • Flexible : Amazon Route 53 Traffic Flow provides users flexibility in choosing traffic policies based on multiple criteria, such as endpoint health, geographic location, and latency.
  • Scalable : Route 53 is designed to automatically handle large volume queries without the user’s interaction.
  • Fast : Distributed Route 53 DNS servers around the globe provide a low-latency fast service.
  • Cost Effective : You only pay for what you use, for example, the hosted zones managing your domains, the number of queries which are answered per domain, etc.
  • Secure : You can create and grant unique credentials and permissions to each and every user with your AWS account, while you have to mention who has access to which parts of the service.

Key Features :

  • Traffic Flow : You can route end users to the endpoint according to your application latency, health, and other considerations that should provide the best user experience.
  • Latency Based Routing : Route end users to the AWS region with the low latency.
  • Geo DNS : Routes users to an endpoint, depending on detected nearest geographic location.
  • Monitoring : Monitors health and performance of applications.
  • DNS Failover : Route your end users to an alternate location to avoid website crashes or outages.
  • Domain Registration : Acts as a domain registrar, allowing you to select domain names and register for them with the AWS console.
