Google Drive File Stream & Google Drive Backup and Sync
Through file stream you can access any files in your Google Drive or Shared Folders, as the files are getting saved in the cloud. Backup and Sync app stores and syncs Google Drive content on your local hard drive.
Individuals and organizations have been using Google Drive mainly to keep data securely stored on Cloud. Google Drive File Stream is a new method to access all of your organization’s Google Drive files, including Team Drives, directly from your computer, without taking up space on your hard drive. Drive File Stream doesn’t require you to download your files first in order to access them from your system. Instead, when you need to view or update/edit a file, it automatically streams on-demand from the cloud. Google Drive Backup and Sync syncs and stores Drive content locally on your computer.
What is Drive File Stream ?
By the help of Drive File Stream directly we can transfer the data from the cloud to PC. Because Drive files are stored in the cloud, any changes are automatically updated to cloud and desktop. Google Drive File Stream is the desktop version of Google Drive that we use via the Web .
There are different versions available based on the system OS we want to run the application.
Windows: Windows 7 , Windows Server 2012 and up.
Mac: El Capitan (10.11) and up. For High Sierra (10.13).
Advantages of Drive File Stream-
- It creates a virtual disk drive which redirects to your Google Drive. In this case, the file isn’t actually stored on your computer or synced when there are changes. File Stream just presents files in a way so that they can be streamed to you on demand from the cloud In a second you can search and manage and access files on-demand.
- Choose which files you want to be available for offline users.
- For more quick access to the work, most used files are available in the background.
- Organizations may not want to leave files on uncontrolled endpoints like PC’s for security reasons, may want to rotate a user’s password and deny access, Drive File Stream allows that.
- Organization users have centralized file shares which they want to make available to their team. File Stream gives the user access to the G-Suite domain’s Shared Folders.
- It can be merged with Microsoft Outlook and Meet scheduling is also available.
- You can also see who is editing in Microsoft office.

Steps to follow in order to get started with Drive File Stream:
- Login to Google Account.
- Download File Stream .exe file.
- Run the installation process in the backend.
- Log in to the admin panel with email address and password.
- Select Allow.
What is Backup & Sync App ?
Using Backup to store and sync drive content on the computer. To use the backup and sync app, first need to download and install it on different Operating Systems. The installation file format is different.
For installing on Windows and Mac OS.
Steps:
- Click on Download Backup and Sync on your computer.
- Go through the terms of service and click on Agree and Download.
In Mac OS Installation Process:
- The file format for download- backupandsync.dmg.
- After downloading go to the application folder- Then Click on Ok and open.
- Sign in with google account.
In Windows OS Installation Process:
- The file format for download- installbackupandsync.exe.
- After download allow the application to change the computer settings.
- Sign in with google account.
